ESG & SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY

Technology, IT & Telecom

From data center energy demand to e-waste and network emissions — sustainability infrastructure for a sector growing faster than its own reporting can keep up.

THE SECTOR AT A GLANCE

Software and IT services, cloud/hyperscale and colocation data centers, telecom operators (mobile, fixed, satellite), and hardware/device manufacturing and distribution. It's the connective infrastructure behind every other sector's digitalization, and the fastest-growing consumer of energy and capital of any industry today, driven by cloud migration, 5G rollout and the AI compute build-out. Pakistan's IT exports hit a record ~$3.4bn in 9 months of FY2025-26, telecom subscribers passed 200 million, and the GCC is racing to become a regional AI and cloud hub.

WHERE THE PRESSURE IS BUILDING

AI-Driven Energy Demand

Data center electricity use is projected to nearly double by 2030 as AI servers grow ~30% a year. This strains grid capacity, renewable sourcing, and water use for cooling.

E-Waste & Critical Minerals

Only ~22% of the sector's e-waste is currently recycled. Hardware supply chains carry real conflict-mineral and human-rights due-diligence risk further upstream.

Network Emissions & Inclusion

Base stations and backup diesel generation add up fast where grid power is unreliable, as in Pakistan, while affordable access remains a core social expectation from regulators.
